The island is home to more than 6,000 species of plants and wildlife and these can be explored in the Main Ridge Forest Reserve (the oldest forest reserve in the Western hemisphere), little Tobago Bird Sanctuary amongst others.
Tobago has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Those on the Caribbean coast tend to have golden sand and clear blue waters and are ideal for swimming and snorkelling. Those on the Atlantic coast are more exposed and have darker sand; these are great for walks and beachcombing.
Between March and June every year, giant leatherback turtles visit to lay eggs on some of the beaches in Tobago. Nature-lovers are invited to enjoy witnessing the turtles nesting. These turtles play an important role in the ocean’s ecosystem and there is a vibrant conservation effort to ensure that these endangered species survive. Several groups monitor the sea turtle populations and issue strict guidelines for turtle watching and protection.
The beautiful coral reefs can be explored in glass bottom boats or, if you are feeling adventurous, snorkelling. To ensure that the reefs are preserved, there are guidelines to be followed.
If you enjoy the myriad of wonderful bird life, flora and fauna in the rain forest or the underwater beauty of secluded coral coves, then come and share the secrets that Tobago can offer. Many nature documentaries have been filmed on Tobago and it attracts professional bird and nature photographers.
