Ohana Villa - Bacolet Bay , Tobago

Description:

Entered by a pair of 14 ft wooden doors is this Balinese style four bedroom villa, oozing luxurious rustic chic, with glorious views overlooking the sea and a semi private beach and bay. The ultimate in open-air living and very romantic.

Sitting high up, at the end of a small sandy cove, views of the Atlantic from all areas of the house are extensive and dramatic. Designed by a Trinidadian architect John Otway and constructed almost entirely of varnished yellow pine by local craftsmen, Ohana offers a unique and calming effect on all visitors. Whether you are walking through the Tranquility Courtyard or the water terrace in this environment the troubles of the outside world disappear.

During the day all the shutters in the living areas can be lifted (there are no windows!) to let the villa benefit from the cooling breeze.

The manicured lawns lead via a gate to a small sandy cove shared with only three other villas.

Ohana is a Hawaiian word for family rest-house and the owners have ensured that this very special house is a haven of peace and quiet to escape to with family and friends ' for themselves and for guests who have the opportunity to share some of its magic. The sheer scale of the property, providing privacy with luxury and style ensure that as soon as you arrive, you'll find the stresses of the city slip away as easily as swimsuits and pareos go on.

The vast living room is open to the bay, allowing ocean breezes to work their relaxing charms, but simply wind down the cream canvas shutters to provide restful shade for a snooze on the over-sized teak day beds, filled with plump cushions and bolsters. Four teak upright armchairs also recline fully to allow you to relax completely and the house is stocked with board games, videos and a selection of cds for times when the view alone is not enough.

The kitchen is delightfully open and breezy, with two large ceiling fans and Demerara windows on sticks which open to give a view of the perfect little beach below. Although not strictly a private beach, access is very limited ' whilst Ohana guests have exclusive use of the steps through the garden, others have to make their own way which means that you are unlikely to encounter more than the occasional sunbather or pelican with whom to share the sand.

The kitchen is fully equipped with a double-door stainless steel fridge with filtered water and ice making facility; a large stainless steel gas cooker ' and of course a dishwasher. To one side is an open-air barbecue area and on the other a pantry and a utility room with large washing and drying machines.

The master bedroom and its huge en-suite bathroom have shuttered windows which open out so that you can shower, take a bath or lounge in the teak four-poster bed while watching pelicans fishing in the turquoise Atlantic.

Bedroom 2 has its own veranda, which seems to float over a fish-filled lily pond. It opens out to the gazebo, Jacuzzi and two infinity pools ' one deep and the other shallow.

Bedroom 3 has a small private terrace overlooking the pond and gazebo.

Bedroom 4 has twin teak four poster beds (converting to a double four-poster if preferred) and opens out onto a courtyard, a delightful and private tranquil oasis surrounding by clumps of rustling bamboo.

2 housekeepers (live-out) look after the running of the house and will do as much or as little shopping and cooking as you require.

Ohana is indeed a very special place, a place that refreshes the mind, as well as the body.

Due to the open layout the villa is not recommended for children under six apart, of course, from babies.
